About Big bluestem
Big bluestem is a wonderful native grass that brings movement and beauty to your yard while supporting local wildlife. Birds love nesting in its sturdy stems, and insects that feed on it provide meals for songbirds and other creatures. In late summer and fall, the plant turns purplish-bronze and produces distinctive three-pronged seed heads that look like a bird's foot, giving it another common name: turkeyfoot. Even in winter, these seed heads add lovely texture to the garden and landscape.
This tough perennial grass is remarkably low-maintenance once established. Plant it in a sunny spot with decent drainage and let it do its thing. Water it occasionally during its first year to help it get settled, then it's pretty much on its own. You can cut it back in early spring if you like, or leave it standing through winter for wildlife shelter. Big bluestem rewards you with years of dependable beauty and ecological value.
